Carol built SteegeThomson to serve nonprofit clients with strategic thinking and strong execution. Over the years, she has also nurtured outstanding teams with the ability to connect clients to their audiences across all media and all platforms. Her own ability to think clearly, plan realistically and shape crisp messages has served many institutional leaders and, on occasion, helped them avert crises. She has provided wise counsel for major fundraising and marketing campaigns, and her editorial skills are the foundation of SteegeThomson’s signature strength in writing and messaging.
What is your favorite aspect of communications/marketing?
Turning information into a compelling story that helps people outside the organization understand why they should care about the work, and helps people inside remember why they do it.
What advice would you pass on to future nonprofit communicators?
Don’t get too distracted by that shiny new thing. You need to keep pace with new delivery systems, but you will always need to move people to care — and then to act.
What is the best thing about your job?
I talk to so many interesting, caring people and then get to tell their stories.
What was your favorite subject in school? Why?
I toggled between English and history, depending on the teachers. Follow the teacher, not the subject.
If you could wave a magic wand, what ill in the world would you solve and why?
I would solve climate change so that the Earth and all its beautiful creatures might survive.
